SCHOOL OF BANKING CERTIFICATE STUDY
TRACKS The School of Banking has developed a wide range of applied banking and related academic courses from which students may select in order to further their professional development. By completing a minimum of 13 courses, with a grade point average of 2.0 (C) or better, a student qualifies to receive the TGIF School of Banking Certificate. The student may follow one of seven study tracks toward the School of Banking Certificate: ·

International Banking ·
Personal Financial Services ·
Commercial Financial Services ·
The Securities Industry ·
Real Estate/Insurance Sales/Customer Relations Each School of Banking Certificate Study Track requires the completion of 6 Core Courses and specific required courses to provide basic competency in each area of specialization. Beyond the core and required courses, students may take electives to complete the certificate requirements. With the approval of the Executive Director or Academic Dean, certain elective courses may be substituted for required courses. Students who wish to make such substitutions should seek an appointment with a counselor. Prerequisites Many School of Banking Certificate
courses have prerequisites. Students
should consult the Course Description section of this catalog to determine
the particular prerequisite for each course.
It is the student’s responsibility to see that prerequisites have been

Recommended Study Tracks The study track a student selects should be consistent with the student’s talents, interests, current job responsibilities and/or long-range career goals. Counselors are available to assist students in their selection of a study track. It is recommended that students new to the School of Banking take courses that provide basic principles and a broad overview, such as Principles of Banking, Consumer Bank Products or International Banking Operations. Other courses that the new student should consider are English Composition, Mathematics for Business or Human Relations in Organizations. These recommended courses will introduce concepts that will be the focus of more specialized courses in the future. Requirements for a Second Certificate in
the School of Banking A student who completes requirements for a certificate at the Institute and wishes to earn a second certificate at TGIF must complete all certificate requirements (except the core courses) taking a minimum of 8 courses beyond the first certificate. English Writing Skills Requirement Students are required to successfully complete English Composition (001) to qualify for a School of Banking Certificate. During the first class of English Composition students will be given a diagnostic test. Based on their skill level, students may be placed in Basic English Writing Skills (102). Those placed in Basic English Writing Skills must also complete English Composition (001) to satisfy Certificate requirements. Computer Requirement All students pursuing the School of Banking Certificate are required to take the course No. 099 Microsoft Office for Bankers (or 099A, 099E or 099W). Required Core Courses The following 6 core courses are required for all study tracks: · English Composition (001) · Business Writing (002) or Oral Communication (007) · Principles of Banking (012) · Mathematics for Business (030) · Accounting Principles 1 (032) · Microsoft Office for Bankers (099) or (099A, 099E or 099W) Operations/Supervision Study Track This track is designed to develop and expand supervisory skills appropriate to departmental operations. In addition to the 6 Core Courses there are 6 required courses and 1 elective in the Operations/Supervision study track:
International Banking Study Track This track is designed to develop knowledge of international banking products, services and procedures. In addition to the 6 Core Courses there are 6 required courses and 1 elective in the International Banking track:
Personal Financial Services Study Track This track is designed to develop knowledge of retail banking products, procedures, appropriate sales and customer relations skills. In addition to the 6 Core Courses there are 7 required courses in the Personal Financial Services track:
Commercial Financial Services Study
Track This track is designed to develop the analytical skills and knowledge required to service commercial and corporate banking customers. In addition to the 6 Core Courses there are 5 required courses and 2 electives in the Commercial Financial Services track:
The Securities Industry Study Track This track is designed to develop knowledge of the securities industry, its products and its procedures. In addition to the 6 Core Courses there are 7 required courses:
Real Estate/Insurance Study Track This track is designed for those who are engaged in the real estate, mortgage and insurance departments of banks. Satisfactory completion of courses 023 and 024 will meet the educational requirements for the New York State Real Estate Salesperson’s and Broker’s license examination. Successful completion of course 025 will satisfy the educational requirement of the New York State Insurance Law for licensing in life/accident and health. In addition to the 6 Core Courses there are 6 required courses and one elective in the Real Estate/Insurance track:
Sales/Customer Relations Study Track This track is designed to develop the skills necessary for guiding the development of successful marketing strategies. In addition to the 6 Core Courses there are 7 required courses:
